I don't suppose there is an easy way to get the monitor refresh rates configured in xorg.conf that doesn't involve hunting the web for appropriate values (and exactly whatever needs putting in the xorg.conf anyway). I have filed a bug about that - I think that when ddc is unavailble that there should be a picker like the one that was in dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg that allows one to pick a monitor type (in the simple version), or monitor res and max vertical? refresh to get those values for xorg.conf.
