Bug#489312: Flickering and blackouts in DVI

Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.9.0-1
Severity: important

The new ati driver gives me flickers (horizontal bands of the screen, approx 50px high, temporarily displayed in the wrong vertical location) as well as blackouts (display goes completely black for 2-3 seconds, dropped sync?).

The problems are related to display activity. Moving windows causes blackout very quickly (under a second), while if sitting idle the screen stays alive for 10-30 seconds.

Reverting back to 1:6.8.0-1 makes these problems go away.

Text mode does not have any problems.

My video card is an ATI R430 (Radeon X800 XL PCIe).
My display is a DELL 2000FP and it is connected via DVI-D.
