I see. I don't know which resolution the vesa driver is supposed to
support, but it's probably more than 640x400. What kind of monitor do
you have? Which resolutions does it support? What's the output of xrandr?

I did not check xrandr but I get the full DDC readings including refresh rates and supported modes in the X log. The monitor is a 16" LCD supporting 1280x1024.
