problem about gdm in debian

Hi all, I have problem on gdm in Debian
When I logout, the laptop goes dead;
When I type "/etc/init.d/gdm stop", X quit, but the process X still exists.
the process X can't quit, even I "killall X" or "kill -9 pid_of_X".
and when I start a new X by "gdm start", the X starts at :1, but the
origin process X take up my 50% cpu.

Debian/testing, newly updated.
What infomation should I provide?
