xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.2-2 is definitely problem-free. I ran a process for about 10 hours that would let glxgears run for five minutes, killed it, and then restarted glxgears. If there was going to be a problem it would have shown up there or when my screensaver kicked in. If I experience a hang with it now, I'm pretty much convinced it would be a separate issue.
