The machine is an AMD Athlon X64 Dual core, the graphics adapter is an
ATI Radeon 9600 (RV350), the Monitor is an Acer AL1711, plugged into the
adapter via VGA.

No, neither nor.

The result is the same (no X with the latest package version) plus my
usual resolution of 1280×1024 won’t work with the old version. Putting
those lines back makes it work again.
