I don't think this is ATI specific. This is probably Xserver bug #428388 which has been reported upstream at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10525

We had a patch for Xserver 1.3 (the one in testing) but it doesn't seem to work for Xserver 1.4 (in unstable). I am merging and updating the status of all the relevant bugs accordingly.
