I was having the same problem on my Toshiba S1800-400 laptop. So far,however, I was able to run X by starting up with a 1280x1024 (IIRC)resolution and using the fbdev driver, but that's _really_ sluggish.Apt-pinning xorg to stable worked just now, and things run much moresmoothly.
