when I run the starwars hack from xscreensaver, Xorg freezes. The rest of the system is working, however, the console is locked forever. I was able to login remotely, but gdb Xorg crashed and killing X had no effect, even

Sounds like a GPU lockup. It's most likely an issue in the Mesa driver
in libgl1-mesa-dri. Please provide the full Xorg.0.log.

Just if you are interrested, I'm able to get a strace by attaching Xorg before the freeze. At the end, it contains repeated

ioctl(7, 0x6444, 0) = EBUSY


Should I get a full strace?
