Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4
Severity: important

I've upgraded two machines (same HW) from woody to sarge,
X server won't start anymore. Same config as in woody, in both
cases the stock sarge kernel, tried also the 2.4.26 sarge kernel.

Some relevant info from dmesg (2.6.7):

matroxfb: Matrox MGA-G200 (AGP) detected
matroxfb: MTRR's turned on
matroxfb: 640x480x8bpp (virtual: 640x13107)
matroxfb: framebuffer at 0xE3000000, mapped to 0xd8912000, size 8388608
fb0: MATROX frame buffer device
fb0: initializing hardware
...
mtrr: 0xe3000000,0x1000000 overlaps existing 0xe3000000,0x800000
...
# modprobe mga
[drm] Initialized mga 3.1.0 20021029 on minor 0: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G200 AGP

If matroxfb_base is loaded (attached logs) I see an almost black screen
with some red, dotty vertical lines.
If matroxfb_base is not loaded, the server (after some trials) fails and
switches to VT console.

If I get some hint about the way to proceed I can provide more feedback.

Thanks,
       Igor
