I guess that was still when forcing DRI on, right? The upstream devs decided to force DRI off on some boards like yours because they are not supported well yet. The good thing is that you don't get a black screen with a default config anymore :/ I am retitling your bug report accordingly.
I don't think the experimental drivers will help here, they mostly only bring some 2D support for newer boards (r500/r600), nothing new for RS480 boards like yours. With Alex (one of the upstream devs) working at AMD, I hope you can expect some improvements in the future.
