With the new experimental xserver-xorg-video-ati my ibook freezes as soon as I try to use the external display either booting with the monitor plugged or booting without, plugging it and doing a "xrandr --output vga-0 --auto".

I try to tail the syslog log by ssh when enabling the vga output but it gave no result.

It is just a freeze of X then, not of the whole machine?

Did you look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

If there is something I can do to investigate further, just ask.

Did the behavior occur with earlier versions? We have had a lot of other releases and snapshots from the 6.7.19x series in experimental in the last months. You may find them back on http://snapshot.debian.net/.

The final 6.7.197 has been uploaded to unstable today, and a new snapshot of the next 6.7.198 to experimental. It would be nice to try with them first.

Then, please send the whole output of /usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 3>&1 after the problem occurred (it will include xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log among other things).
