Package: xterm
Version: 222-1etch2
Severity: normal

I have no clue why this happens again since xterm isn't updated for long
time.

When I start xterm I get:
mesg: error: tty device is not owned by group `tty'

~> ls -l `tty`
crw--w---- 1 klaus utmp 136, 10 2007-11-25 11:11 /dev/pts/10

If I chgrp of /usr/bin/xterm to tty it works well.

Is there any reason the xterm binary is group utmp? And then why is this
long fixed bug opened again?

Hello,

I just did several debugging as the problem reappears randomly. And
finally I found the problem. First, it is not a bug of xterm than more
of pbuilder or even the kernel.

The problem appears if using pbuilder with the option (default)
USEDEVPTS=yes. The reason is that pbuilder do NOT specify the group of
the filesystem and so it defaults to 5(tty).

Well, this is the source of the problem. But the real problem is that
the kernel only provides ONE shared devpts! So after using pbuilder
every time the devpts is using the default group.

So, many thanks for the fast reaction. The bug is completely closed (It
was even not a bug (this time) of xterm.)

Regards
   Klaus Ethgen
