Bug#451989: Further info
This morning I wanted to do an apt-get update/apt-get upgrade, hoping
that there had been an xorg update. At the gdm login prompt I hit
<ctrl><alt><F1> to get to a text console (so as to avoid the risk of a
freeze up). Instead of getting a text console my screen went black and
the monitor's power button turned from green to amber, indicating it had
gone into power saving mode or was otherwise not receiving a signal. I
tried several different keys to "wake up" the system without luck.
Pressing <ctrl><alt><F7> caused the monitor power button to turn back to
green and I was returned to the gdm login prompt. Repeated attempt to
get to a text console produced the same behaviour. Further, when I
rebooted the system at the point where it would normally stop X and show
text output the monitor was again put into power saving mode.
This may explain, at least partially, why people experiencing this
problem have been unable to get to a text console when X has frozen up
on them.
