After upgrading to Unstable-04Nov2007 the problem is gone: dvd playback is fluid again. I don't know exactly when the problem's been fixed (today it's the first time I upgrade my Unstable installation since last August), but now it is fixed. Thank you. Of course it's not fixed in Etch as this is not a security issue. Andrea
