(Sorry for the long delay...)

I just tried this now via a Modeline and PreferredMode set in xorg.conf, and it works!

BTW, I tried without the Modeline at first and just set Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024", 
which lead to a black screen and a dead keyboard.
