Which latest version are you talking about? 1.2.2-6 in unstable? Did you
upgrade directly from Etch 1.1.1-3 to unstable? did you try 1:1.2.2-1
currently in testing?

Can you try 1:1.2.1-1 from

We also have bug #392864 where the horizontal wheel sometimes acts as a
vertical wheel, could be related...
