Please send the whole output of 'xrandr' after reinstalling 1.9.99 so
that we see all available modes for each output. You can change the mode
of output FOO with something like
xrandr --output FOO --mode 1024x768 --rate 75

I don't know about 1.4.7, it could be the last old-style MGA driver. But
1.9.99 will very very probably be fixed. It doesn't get as much
attention as Intel or ATI driver, but Tilman Sauerbeck has been taking
good care of it in the last month, so there's no reason why it would
change now. This RandR 1.2 driver is the future way to go, most drivers
are going this way now. MGA 1.9.99 is too young to be perfect, but it
should improve in the future. If you're really interested about this,
you might want to talk to Tilman directly, for instance on IRC.
