it would be very nice, if ther would be an autoconfiguration like knoppix does it. i think many of
the problem reports would disappear by itself then.

mostly it is not absoluteley necessary to tune your x-server to your specific hardware, it is
sufficient to get it working with clear fonts, and the correct res
olution.

X configuration in Debian "just works" in most cases as far as I can
tell.  I don't think keeping this bug report open is useful, so I'm
closing it.  Feel free to report new bugs if you have specific
suggestions about what should be improved in the configuration
mechanism.
