The xserver calculations, at least for my machine, do not provide
usable results.

Although the X software calculates a mode within the ranges, 
and for the given resolution, a black screen is all I get
unless the horizontal sync is around 60.

I went through several different configurations, and I've recorded them
below. If they're not interesting, here are the bottom lines:

1) The usable range for hsync on an iMac is about 59-63 kHz. The 
server calculations limit themselves to be either below this 
range, or don't go up high enough in vsync to compensate.

2) The result is that the normal debconf defaults for Simple
and Medium don't work for an iMac. If I choose a much larger 
monitor than I really have, then a high-resolution mode might
be found accidentally (also outside the defaults offered in 
debconf).

3) I think the real solution is to change the way the xserver does
calculations for the iMac, to make it zero in on hsyncs around 60 kHz.
>From what I've read on the mailing list, this strategy will work for
many older and newer Macs too. 

4) In the short term, I think debconf should always restrict iMacs
to around 59-63 kHz. That will result in an xserver calculation match
at 1024x768 and above. To help with 800x600 and 640x480, #3 will 
have to be addressed.

This time, with the horizontal range tightened fro 53 to 59, a non-synced
screen appears (diagonally stretched from bottom left to top right). It's
not black, but not usable.

With the horizontal sync range tightened even further, a usable visual mode 
is found (1280x960). Note at this point I do NOT have 1280 x 960 chosen
as a possible mode. Here is what I have in the modes section (this is the

But notice that the 1024 mode calls for an hsync of 68.7. If I 
take out the 1280x960 config entry, I get a black screen - the
 calculated mode is really not within the capability of the monitor. It 
_really_ wants to be 60 Hz, and won't display if it's anything much 
less or more.

As a result, I have not found a way to make it display 800x600. Keeping
the hsync where it seems to require it, and letting the vsync go 
wherever, while only allowing 800x600 and 640x480 modes, only results
in it going back to 1280x960:

I think some people such as visually impaired people may want the display
to be able to go to 800 x 600. I think it's the server's calculation capability
that's stopping it from being able to do it. The server thinks that those
lower resolutions must be obtained with lower hsync's, and won't consider 60, 
while the Mac insists that 60 kHz is all it knows.

If I let the hsync range go way down, I get calculated modes but it's no 
good: the mac gets a black screen, the server thinks everything's cool.

Choosing 17" Simple (btw, this screen is 15") gives me 3 calculated
modes, but none which actually work (black screen, none are close to

but that's just not a good approach for the iMac.
