I made a new install of debian etch from a nightly cd last night, and
after booting into the newly installed system, I encountered a crash in
xorg[1]. I eventually found that if I commented out "UseFBDev True" in
my xorg.conf[2]'s Device section for the video card, then the system
worked normally (and quite well, I must add).

Here are the log and config, respectively:
