I had tried the testing version before.  With 2.0.0-5, the screen does
not "melt" anymore, but it is not quite OK yet: the screen stays
black, apart from the pointer (which changes shape appropriately when
one moves over an otherwise invisible xterm).  It sounds very similar
to Bug#430085, and I'll investigate solutions that I think I saw
elsewhere.  However, for now, it would seem that bug 420732 could be
closed again.

p.s.  I really should experiment more, but let me mention that the
Xorg.0.log file has the following errors; if this immediately tells
you what the problem is, please let me know!
