"probably"? Please check this with dpkg -s xserver-xorg-video-nsc

The changelog between 2.8.1 and 2.8.2 is very small, there's probably no
chance 2.8.1 works while 2.8.2 does not.

Who's talking about building it? Installing would be enough as long as
the package has already been built in the past. From the report, you
seem to have an i386 architecture, so it should be easy.

The 2.8.2 nsc driver currently in experimental has been built for Etch,
it is available from [1] (or from apt-get/aptitude with an
"experimental" line in sources.list). It only has one dependency against
xserver-xorg-core >= 1.2.0-4, which is available for Etch from [2] and
should not cause any problems (1.2 mainly brought cleanup/fixes, the
major/risky changes are in 1.3). And this one depends on libdrm >= 2.3
which is available for Etch at [3] and won't break anything.
