There's no 1600x1200 at all?

DDC does report 1600x1200 but does not report any higher resolution,
if I read it correctly.

Which DDC readout is this? One from Xorg.0.log? Or something else?

Yes, the one from Xorg.0.log.

Hum, why does the screen do "a surprisingly good job of rendering this"
if DDC does not report it to be supported?
It's hard to know whether this monitor support 1920x1200 in the end...

It definitely does NOT support 1920x1200. "A surprisingly good job"
was not intended to imply that it was a usable resolution; only that I
was surprised not to get confetti or a black screen.

What does xrandr --verbose say?

I am not in front of the computer in question right now, but I will
check this evening.
