uncheck sync_to_vblank and detect_refresh_rate under
/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options
That's the solution I found for Beryl exhibiting the same behaviour.
I happen to have recently installed Compiz 0.3.6 as well though and
can say that vt-switching goes off without a hitch for me under Compiz
as well (with those settings disabled).
