Bug#414177: xserver-xorg-video-via: Support for VIA P4M800 Northbridge chipset

Package: xserver-xorg-video-via
Version: 1:0.2.1-6
Severity: wishlist

I have a P4M800 chipset and I can't get Xorg work using the 'via'
driver because of the lack of support for this chipset. Because of
this I can't watch videos properly because the image is displayed many
seconds after the sound, which is really annoying (enabling frame
dropping helps little when trying to watch dvd's), not to mention the
high CPU usage. Also, the normal CPU usage of Xorg is notibly higher
(I used to have a PM800 chipset), and all the applications (including
games) that make use of OpenGL for direct rendering work really slow
because direct rendering isn't available. VIA released the VIA IGP
Framebuffer Driver (avilable at
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=20&CatID=2260&SubCatID=150
) some time ago, which is a linux kernel module, but it is only the
framebuffer driver. Also, while searching on the web I found the next
page titled "Kernel Display Driver source Code Installation Guide" for
Fedora Core 3/4: http://www.ubuntuusers.de/paste/475/ (the author is
VIA Technologies, INC. so I guess this document is available somewhere
at the VIA arena website), this document seems to explain the whole
process required to achive the goal. But I couldn't find any page
where it mentions under what licence the source code of the VIA FBDev
module is released.

I hope somebody has the time to add support for the P4M800 chipset,
since I guess I'm not the only person using Debian who has the same
situation; and I also think it is important to have better support for
different hardware so more people can switch to Debian without having
so many problems (with this I mean the fact that Debian never got to
detect my video hardware correctly, I had to manually find out the
right configuration).

Thanks
