Package: XFree
Version: Latest Stable Release (compiled for 4.1.0.1,
module version 1.0.0)

When I startx I get - Fatal server error: failed to
initialize core devices - and the message about
reporting bugs. Since I don't have the system running
yet because of this crash I'll have to manually type
only a portion of the /var/log/XFree86.0.log

(**) Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
(**) Option "CorePointer"
(**) Configured Mouse: Core Pointer
(**) Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device
/dev/input/mice No such device.
(EE) Configured Mouse: cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Configured
Mouse"
(II) UnloadModule: "mouse"
(WW) No core pointer registered
No core pointer

Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices

No matter what choices are made when using XF86config
the same error occurs and the XFree86.0.log reads the
same. Although this is only my 2nd day of trying to
install linux it seems perhaps that XFree86 is looking
for the mouse device file at the wrong place and that
the config file isn't being updated.

Note: under one install variation I tried the mouse
was responsive while KDE was booting until KDE started
initializing input devices, then I received the same
server error.

I'm using a Debian GNU 3.0 rev 1 "woody"
PS/2 Logitech Trackman Marble mouse

As this is my first report I apologize if this is too
much or to little information.

Todd Burns

I am closing this bug since the submitter did not reply to the ping I
send a couple weeks ago. If anybody ever reproduces this problem, feel
free to reopen.
