Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-7
Severity: important

Since and "apt-get dist-upgrade" replaced XFree86 I've been unable to
start my computer without going to single user mode.

X comes up with the grey screen of death and a simple message saying
"Xsession: Cannot write to /tmp, X may die" (paraphrase).

ok, before you point me to the numerous threads about "derrr! your hard
drive's full, that's why it can't start", I have 6Gb free in /tmp. Also,
the permissions are all there (including sticky bit).

I can start an x session as root.

I've done some digging and found that in /etc/X11/Xsession where it
tests for ability to write to /tmp, there's the line
	WRITE_TEST=$(tempfile)
Now it always fails to write to this file. However, I can write to any
other file I want in /tmp so if I change it to:
	WRITE_TEST="$(tempfile)xx"
Then I don't get the warning message (of course, X still won't start my
session because all I've patched is the test).

As a normal user, from the command line,
	myfile=$(tempfile); echo "hi">$myfile;
works fine, creates the file and doesn't whinge.

It's driving me mad, and I've posted on a couple of high volume
discussion lists and had nothing back that has fixed the problem, so I
am assuming there to be a bug. I'm blaming Xorg as that appeared to be
when it all went wrong (and the dist-upgrade to Xorg has given me grief
in the past).

Tar.
