Bug#305487: libxft2: Autohinted fonts look worse with 2.1.7 than with 2.1.2

Hi,

About 2 years ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding
autohinted fonts not looking good after upgrading libxft. Did you
reproduce this problem recently? If not, I will close this bug in the
next weeks.

I'm using a couple of settings that are different now than before (the most notable one being the use of Native mode instead of Autohint mode), and that seems to have made a significant difference in the rendering of fonts.

That said, there are still some letters in some fonts at some sizes which don't look as good as perhaps they should (e.g., the "O" character will have a slightly blurry top and bottom that extend past the boundaries the character itself should be limited to).

At this point, I'm no longer in a position to compare it with the old renderer. I don't have the source for it and the binary package isn't available (it may never have been available for amd64, which is what I'm now running).

If it's unlikely that there'd be anything that could be done to fix this bug then feel free to close it.
