Bug#407094: Xorg's configuration defaults don't work after installation

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-9

Computer : i386 with a Radeon 9200SE graphics card.

I have tried this week's (January 13) weekly DVD
image.
Installation worked quite fine, but after I booted
into
my new system, gdm couldn't start the X server, as it
crashed each time. I tried then to start the X server
through bash, as root. It failed. I do not have the
exact output of the crash, but the last line was
something like "no monitors found."

Finally, I did a "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". It
didn't work the first time (the LEDs on my monitor
blinked - looked pretty cool, though :-), and I had to
pass again the "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" because

I found out that the max. refresh rate of my monitor
was 60 Hz, and the one set _by default_ by the xserver

was 70 Hz. It works perfectly since then.

I got through my problem, but what if this happens to
a willfull but unexperienced linux user, which will
after this kind of experience say to ALL his friends
"don't use linux; look what happened to me last night,

etc.". What about getting the default things to work
so
that this kind of user may enjoy Linux Debian, without
having to understand all the system beneath.
Personnally, I'm trying to do my best to show Linux
Debian to my friends, but when they ask me for the
DVDs, I have to tell them I cannot give them because
they could render their computer in an unusable
state (a computer with no graphics is worst than no
computer for a most of people).

This bug meant is for repairing xserver-xorg's
configuration defaults, as I don't have the slightest
idea of how to do it. If you want additionnal
information, just ask for it and I'll give it
immediately. Thanks in advance for helping.

(Don't mind, I'm fourteen years old)
