This is likely specific to the NVIDIA driver, but I haven't been able to reproduce this with the NVIDIA driver and compiz 0.3.4, which will probably be uploaded sometime soon. However, it seems that switching to another terminal and back makes compiz crash with the NVIDIA proprietary driver, but that's something you'll have to take up with NVIDIA, it works fine with other open source drivers.
