Hello,
using the (Matrox) framebuffer seems to be a necessary condition for
experiencing this bug. I do not experience it, while using regular
Linux console with
Section "Device"
Identifier "Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400/G450"
Driver "mga"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
VGA-compatible devices on PCI bus:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400/G450 (rev 03)

ii xserver-xorg-video-mga 1.4.4.dfsg.1-1 X.Org X server --
On a sidenote: Mario, you are running a kernel that is not supported
in etch or sid (2.4.27), how about doublechecking whether this applies
to 2.6.18, too?
