As far as I can see the most important issue appears when upgrading
from 1.0.0-4 (maybe from other 1.0.0 versions, too), because this
completely removes fonts.dir.  The sarge version handles this correct.

But also a fresh installation of etch is broken.  If only
xfonts-scalable (and no other Type1 font package) is installed, this
means, that no fonts.dir is installed, which results in
xfonts-scalable been completely unusable.

If gsfonts-x11 is installed before xfonts-scalable, gsfonts-x11 will
work correct, while the fonts from xfonts-scalable aren't accessible.

It is still a policy violation which makes the package and maybe other
packages unusable.  I prefer fixing it instead of discussing the
severity (xfonts-scalable is no longer part of the xfree or x.org
sources, so it isn't a problem to build a new version of this
package).
