Hi, /usr/share/X11/fonts/ is the canonical location these days. I suspect Xvnc may have issues related to overriding the default fontpath, which is why it broke when the font path changed. If you do reopen this bug (which I'm closing as user error), reassign it to vnc4server. If xfonts-base was _actually_ broken, as you claim, then no X server would start for anyone at all.
