Further to my report, I have subsequently replaced my Radeon All-in-Wonder 9700/Pro with an NVidia board swapped from another computer. When I replaced the vesa driver with the nv driver in xorg.conf, and restarted X, X came back up normally and at the higher resolution. Therefore, the problem of X not restarting is peculiar to the ati driver.

On the other hand, I still can't get dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to run. It still quits at the same point without updating xorg.conf.
