Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.0.20
Severity: normal
Severity note: this problem blocks the upgrade of X11 and any other
packages that happen to be upgrade targets at the same time. It may
leave the user without a functioning X. So it may warrant higher
severity. On the other hand, the packages that caused the trouble are
likely not too common, and there is a work-around.
I'm reporting this as suggested in http://wiki.debian.org/Xorg69To7.
The following packages own stuff in /usr/X11/bin/, and thus make the
upgrade impossible. The work-around is to purge them with dpkg -P.
apt-get remove does not work; it gags on the weird state of things in
the middle of the X transition.
x11-common needs to conflict with
cbb
guitar
xext
Once I dpkg -P'd these packages I was able to complete the upgrade
with
apt-get -f install
apt-get dist-upgrade
I had initiated the upgrade with
apt-get dist-upgrade
