That libxft1 doesn't have an alternate dependency upon x11-common is
hardly surprising, since libxft1 is a binary package that was generated
from the xfree86 source package before XOrg was ever in Debian.  It
seems unlikely to me (although I am not a member of the X Strike Force)
that this will be fixed.  The fact that libxft1 is no longer available
or installable in Etch should tell you something...

What applications do you have that use libxft1?  You may want to request
that they be recompiled to use the modern libxft2 package instead.
