Yeah, I realized after I wrote the above that there was no fix. This is...
bad.

So I do have a patch that ejka tested a little bit that does build, but is
known to cause regressions. I'd like to get this sorted out since no one
has been attacking the problem upstream on the X.org side. I haven't
checked the freetype side. Xfont currently has no upstream maintainer, so
it's not likely to get fixed quite so soon. 

I may try and tackle it a bit over the next week but I also want to push
forward with getting 7.1 in to experimental, as that's been lagging far too
much.
