I'm unable to reproduce this problem, xterm runs just fine here.

$ objdump -T /usr/lib/libXmu.so.6|grep _XA_UTF8_STRING
000156e8 g    DO .data  00000004  Base        _XA_UTF8_STRING
$ objdump -T /usr/bin/xterm|grep _XA_UTF8_STRING
08090f2c g    DO .bss   00000004              _XA_UTF8_STRING

Could you send us the output of
"md5sum /usr/bin/xterm /usr/lib/libXmu.so.6.2.0"
and
"dpkg -l xterm libxmu6"
?
