Ah, I see. So the patch is not needed.

Current state with xbase-clients 1:7.0.0-4:
All directories are plain directories, no symlinks
$ ls -dl /usr/lib/X11 /usr/lib/X11/xinit /etc/X11/xinit
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root  36 2006-04-05 10:41 /etc/X11/xinit
drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 136 2006-04-18 01:27 /usr/lib/X11
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root  20 2006-04-25 17:48 /usr/lib/X11/xinit

Contents:
$ ls -l /usr/lib/X11/xinit
- -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 224 2006-04-16 02:50 xinitrc
$ ls -l /etc/X11/xinit/
- -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 223 2005-12-29 08:28 xinitrc
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 107 2005-07-10 03:21 xserverrc
The files (and /usr/bin/startx) are attached to this mail (renamed
accordingly).

I did these things to fix the problem:
1) Remove /usr/lib/X11/xinit/ and its contents.
2) Adjust paths in /usr/bin/startx to point to /etc/X11/xinit/.
This can be done at compile time by setting XINITDIR=/etc/X11/xinit (see
xinit-X11R7.0-1.0.1/startx.cpp).

  Bastian
