Thanks, that's pretty much what I expected, though I have no idea why it's
happening. :/

Couple of wild guesses:

- is your system configured to use cdebconf?
- what do you have as /bin/sh?
- (to the maintainers) is there anything new in the templates that could
  cause a parse failure?
