the problem is actually with /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession: it doesn't seem to
source the system Xsession. so in xdm-config i changed
DisplayManager*session to /etc/X11/Xsession and now i can log in. hope
this helps. of course, /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession should be fixed, i guess.
