I had the same problem today. I use my right Apple key as a Compose key
to accent vowels on an xkb layout.

I think the problem is a bit on the locales side not being setted.

Vincent, could you please try to launch xterm as:

$ LANG=en_US xterm

And try to make the compose key to work? That is a workaround that
worked on my side.
