I did: mv .gnome2 .gnome2.old restart x and login still a problem mv .gnome .gnome.old restart x and login still a problem mv .gnome2_private .gnome2_private.old restart x and login still a problem mv .gnome_private .gnome_private.old restart x and login still a problem mv .gconf .gconf.old restart x and login logs in to reset gnome environment rm -rf .gnome_private mv .gnome_private.old .gnome_private restart x and login logs in to gnome environment rm -rf .gnome2_private mv .gnome2_private.old .gnome2_private restart x and login logs in to gnome environment rm -rf .gnome mv .gnome.old .gnome restart x and login logs in to gnome environment rm -rf .gconf mv .gconf.old .gconf restart x and login logs in to gnome environment BUT I forgot to add that there still is a problem with the console not being accessible with control-alt-f1..f6.
