The newest xterm set the wrong permissions on tty:
ikki:~> ls -l `tty`
crw--w--w- 1 klaus ethgen 136, 9 2006-01-25 22:50 /dev/pts/9
this should be:
crw--w--w- 1 klaus tty 136, 9 2006-01-25 22:50 /dev/pts/9
/etc/default/devpts:
# GID of the `tty' group
TTYGRP=5
...
(gid 5 is group tty
This wrong permissions are problematic with other tools.
