It could well be that I misunderstand the comment about ralt, but...

Please leave support for ralt for composing characters. It is essential 
for Dutch users who normally have a keyboard with US layout but need to 
be able to easily type accented characters like é è ë ó ç.

IMO ralt is by far the cleanest way to do that.

My current keyboard settings are (in Sarge KDE):
setxkbmap -option -option grp:switch,compose:ralt
