Disabling page flipping has no effect, setting

Option	"AccelMethod" "EXA"

fixes the problem, however causes an unusual glitch -- on Gnome startup 
the cursor changes to a bright translucent square, then back to the 
usual arrow. This glitch disappears if software cursor is enabled.
