I'm missing something here. When I did the upgrade again, I used aptitude in 
visual mode. I selected 'U', then 'g'. After I sent you the email, I tried:

sudo dpkg --audit

but, strangely, there were no packages pending configuration. I then tried:

sudo aptitude upgrade

and many X packages plus xlibs-data were upgraded. Now:

[UPGRADE] xlibs-data 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 -> 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
ii  xlibs-data     6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 X Window System client data

but the results are even worse: X abends
