KM400A issues with new x.org server packages
I have a Knoppmyth box (Debian based) which I switched over to x.org.
Previously, with XFree86 I had it running OK with the "via" driver. With
X.org only "vesa" mode works without issues now.
As soon as the x server starts up, I get thin vertical stripes at
regular intervals horking up the display. It doesn't crash -- it just
looks really bad. Generally the stripes are green but it seems to depend
on what's behind them. If I watch a black and white tv show (Perry
Mason ;-) ), the stripes are black.
The box is a Compaq Presario SR1230NX Athlon 3200+ w/ integrated VIA
Unichrome KM400A video.
BTW, the "VBEModes" line is something I have no understanding of that I
found as a suggestion to workaround a similar problem. It seems to make
no difference.
Actually, here's an interesting clue I just found: if I ctrl-alt-f2 to
switch to a virtual terminal console and then switch back to X with
ctrl-alt-f7, the lines are gone. But if I go back to the virtual
terminal, /etc/init.d/gdm restart the lines will come back until I
switch back to the virtual terminal and back to X.
