snaptic/apt-get. namely all the default 3.3.1 kernel installs of 2.6.10 are still there.

I can not now use CTRL ALT Fx from 1-6 to log into a terminal and when I shut
down my xsession crash's and hangs, I get flashing colours blinking over my
screens and the only way out is power down. When I reboot more oftern than
not I have to log in as root and run startx then exit it and reboot to get a
X loggon. the Console login at the login menu is broken in the same way too.
Also I find I can't get my desktop larger that 1024x786
If I try to use xinerama and configure XF86Config-4 for that it will not run
at all this is the log from one of those try's

Please do not report bugs in non-Debian distributions (including
"Debian-based" distributions) in the Debian bug-tracking system; you
should always report them to your distribution. I'm closing the Debian
bug report with this mail.
Furthermore, due to the proprietary, binary-only drivers you are using,
Mepis will almost certainly not be able to help you either. I suggest
that you contact nVidia for support, as they are likely the only ones
who could address your problem. You could also try the standard "nv"
driver and see if that resolves your problem.
Of the two separate issues in this report, only one appears to be a bug:

This certainly looks like a possible bug with the nVidia driver.

This looks like a configuration problem.

This ServerLayout doesn't seem to actually reference a "Screen 1" at
all. Are you sure this is the configuration file which generated the
log above?

This config file still appears to be using nVidia's proprietary
multi-screen mechanism "TwinView", rather than Xinerama. I don't see
where "Screen 1" is coming from at all; either this is not the correct
config file, or there is some strange interaction between nVidia's
driver configuration and the config file handling which generates a
"Screen 1".

Done.
Good luck with resolving this problem.
